Back It Up – Again & Again!

Tallent Agency VA Services

Well, I know this well from total hard drive crashes, viruses wiping out all of my files and almost any other catastrophe
you can imagine …

… but I got lax and BOOM! It happened again!

I babysit my 2 and 4 year old grandsons between 10 1/2 and 11 hours
a day. Meanwhile I am also self-employed as both a Virtual Assistant
and the editor of Rim Digest ezine, a newsletter for marketers and small business owners.

I *think* I am doing a pretty decent job of balancing it all, and then …

I was doing my belated yearly “clean up the emails” portion OF getting my PC cleaned
off for the new year … made wonderful folders for 2012 and 2013 in my gmail program …
sorted any that needed filed and filed them – and as I was doing the “move” option
for ALL of the 2013 files, my 2 year old grandson slammed into the back of my office chair,
my mouse hand slipped and the entire 2013 folder with many SUB-folders of carefully
saved and filed emails went POOF!

Please note: ALL other important files on my computer are backed up to dvd at least monthly and also when any major changes have been made.

Thank goodness I also save the important client emails as files in my client folder in my PC files in their own categorized folders. These do not include the back and forth conversations, however, just usually the initial task email, any updates that need made and the finished product / final email.

Luckily, for me, this time I mostly lost a few THOUSAND filed recipes in their own categories, hundreds of free kindle book download links from the confirmation emails, all of the fun or informative facebook post emails I opted to have delivered to my inbox AND ALL of the emails AND yahoo chat sessions from when my hubby of now almost 2 years & I met and started email and chat flirting, etc.

So, yes, it could have been worse BUT with my knowing how easily our PC and internet worlds can come crashing down among us, I am banging my head against the keyboard
at my gross negligence and carelessness that even allowed my emails to be in jeopardy.

blah!

sigh …

So, now that I have reminded you, stop whatever you are doing and back up ANYTHING you cannot afford to lose and even things that will just “hurt” to have lost.

Your Virtual Assistant Can Maintain Your Blog & Much More!

Tallent Agency VA Services

One of my favorites duties as a Virtual Assistant is setting up article and blog submission sites for my clients, proofreading the posts as they send them to me and then submitting them to the various sites we work with.

I can even do research to find blog and article sites that fit in the niche
or niches that the client works in or where their expertise will be sought after by readers. On average, I can set up six sites for future submissions in about an hour and can even attend to the verification emails most sites send out with access to the client’s email account we use for that purpose.

Being able to perform proofreading and editing in a thorough, yet fast-paced manner,
I usually average 10 pages or posts/articles in an hour and then can submit to the sites
I have set up at the rate of about 10 sites per hour, if there are no complications or complicated html or formatting problems.

I can even schedule your WordPress blog posts to go out when you want them to be
seen AND hook them up to all of your social media accounts to get you the most varied promotional reach.

If this sounds like something you want to do but find you either do not have the time
to do it yourself or the desire to, think about the time and work you can save to use
on things you like to do, like marketing your business, and leave this task to a Virtual Assistant.

multi-tasking

Let your VA handle pesky tasks!

Balancing Your Work In Your Home Business

It is easy not to fully comprehend the amount of work your “at home” business is going to create for you.

You need to sit down and assess the many tasks you will be performing, either for yourself or for your clients, or as in my case and that of other Virtual Assistants, both.

We hear so much about your time being “your own” when you have your own business, and while this is certainly true, you will find that it still takes a huge part of your day or evening just to run the business. Do not go into running your own business, at home or away from home, lightly.

You need drive, persistence and yes, maybe a tad of stubbornness. Lots of people around you – maybe even in your own home – will need to be trained in order for them to recognize that, “Yes! I am working here!” It is easy for people to assume that you are just “playing on your computer” or other quite irritating comments that may come up.

When I started my own home business with a Desk Top Publishing service, I was still raising three school age children and had a new husband who played games for hours and hours on his computer. I was often amazed that HE, of all people, knowing how hard I was working my business starting out, still felt the need to justify every little interruption as, “You can go back to that in a minute. I have a ‘real life’ need at the moment.” And the kids – geez! Every little fight and nit-pick and problem imaginable was an emergency, especially if I was typing away, or Heaven forbid, on the phone!

Once I started offering Virtual Assistance services and my time belonged to a paying client, I still had to pretty much lay down the law to family and friends. No, I could not just stop what I was doing to run an errand, untangle a pigtail or referee in the constant whining, nagging, snitching and spats!

It took a couple of years, frankly and now I am pretty much re-doing it all with 2 and sometimes 3 grandchildren I babysit full time, a “newish” husband and life still going on around me. I love what I do but do find myself constantly reminding those around me that, yes, I am working. Just because I do not leave the house (escape) for a few hours each day does not mean that this is not a real business with real work.

With the 2 and 4 year old grand sons, for example, I offer a time bribe once I get a specific task performed. For example, read a story, play a board game, watch a kid vid, etc. once I am finished with the current “job”. This worked with my own kids and is doing its second generation of duty.
